Weekly insights step aside for a second, make way for food highs and lows. Sometimes only lists serve well to untangle the strands of opinion trapped in balls of food adventures big and small. A tip for making these lists: think about the emotions evoked, not about how impressed you should’ve been. So here, more lists to welcome contention. Courgette cakes at Suzi Tros. I mention a low from this fine establishment below, but I see these cakes… I see them. Sitting pretty on a bed of pumpkin seeds and served with the slickest sweet chilli sauce I’ve had since Lingham’s days. Courgette slivers with just enough moisture to bunch them in a slippery clump before being breaded and fried to a skinny crisp.
Would like to consider myself a korean fried chicken aficionado and didn’t want to enjoy this strange getup as much as I did. The beautifully poached egg atop this korean fried chicken eggs benedict at Egg Lab in Barcelona is an ingenious collision between fatty yolk running into the sweet-spicy skin of a juicy thigh cut.
No the cheese tomato croissant from Paris Baguette is not basic. Forget ham and cheese, this bechamel-choked crusty golden crescent cosied up to tomato paste and fresh tomatoes cut to perfect 0.5-mm thinness is a work of art. I’ve already gotten two friends and two family members hooked. Just don’t forget to ask for it warmed up.
